Upper Monroe

$29.00

Beginning as farmland and forest, the area developed around one of Rochesters Flower City pillars: the Crosman Seed Company. Headquartered on Monroe Avenue starting in 1838, they maintained seed beds and fields in much of what is now present day Upper Monroe neighborhood, as well as fields in Canada and Michigan. They eventually moved their business to East Rochester and divided their land into lots for real estate, which would become the neighborhood.

As Crosman was founded and developed, another landmark continued its role as a silent observer, the region’s pinnacle peak: Pinnacle Hill. And starting in 1838, the local catholic community, under the parish of St. Patricks, laid their dead to rest atop the hill as the first catholic cemetery in Rochester. After Holy Sepulchre opened, those dearly departed were exhumed and reconsecrated, leaving the hill to trail-hiking and mountain biking.

On the other side of the neighborhood, constructed in 1916, sat the former Army National Guard 121st Calvary Division, which evolved into the US Army Vehicle Maintenance and Storate facility, and was finally decommissioned in 2012, which was then converted into a mixed retail/office space.

To commemorate this unique neighborhood, the navy of the shirt colour represents the former Army National Guard and Federal Army building at 490 and Culver, now the Culver Road Armoury, the green accent color highlights the indelible contributions of Crosman Seed Dispensories to our Flower City nickname, and and the featured graphic is the former Saint Patricks Cathedral, which used to honour their dead with the Saint Patrick’s Cemetery, which made up most of Pinnacle Hill from the 1830s to the 1920s.

Rochester's long stretching network of trolley routes serviced the far reaches of the city; The 100 line of Lake Ave and Monroe started in the suburb of Brighton, and traveled east through Upper Monroe, through Center City, switching north to end in the coastal community of Charlotte.
