Steel City

$29.00

Perhaps the most well known nickname of Pittsburgh, in no same part to a rather successful football team, The Steel City might not be as recognizable today as it was in the golden age of industrialization and manufacturing. While foundries and mills still operate in the area, they pale in comparison to the sheer acreage of space, within and about the city, that these land dragons occupied. From the 1870s to about the 1920s, Pittsburgh and the region reigned supreme as the steel capitol of the world, producing at its peak 60% of the world’s steel.

To commemorate this titanic achievement, the Steel City shirt design features one of the last remnants of this fiery past: The Carrie Furnace of Homestead Steel Works. The furnace is a steely grey to showcase it’s connection to steel production, and the shirt itself is an iron grey color to both feature one of the primary ingredients in steel production, and the historical path of Pittsburgh’s industry (Pittsburgh was The Iron City before Carnegie came to town).
