Corn Hill

$29.00

The oldest residential neighborhood in Rochester, The 'Third Ward' was home to Seneca natives, early settlers, freed slaves, wealthy investors, and businessmen. No one knows the true origin of the Corn Hill name; the most widely accepted is that corn crops were grown in the vicinity and sailors and captains gained their bearings on the Genesee River when they saw the 'corn hill.' This origin story is commemorated in the accent color of the shirt.

As Rochesterville continued to develop, the more prominent citizens began building more fancy residences south of the commercial hub in the Third Ward, soon to be nicknamed The Ruffled Shirt District. Homes were built bigger, more extravagant, and with sturdier materials, like brick. The reddish brown color of the shirt showcases this unique history.

With the shift of Rochester’s upper class moving to East Avenue, Corn Hill would start welcoming families from more diverse backgrounds. Clarissa Street became a major black community hub, with restaurants, clubs, and music venues. The Pythodd Club, Shep’s Paradise, and The Elk’s Club were just a few of the venues bringing jazz to Rochester, and flourished into the early 1960s. The 1964 riots would stifle further growth of the community, but the history lives on through oral tradition and the written word. The jazz history also lives on in artwork, like the saxophone featured on the design of the shirt.

Rochester's long stretching network of trolley routes serviced the far reaches of the city; The 1200 line of Central Ave and Jefferson started in Genesee-Jefferson and traveled through Corn Hill and Center City north into the heart of the North and South Marketview Heights neighborhoods.
