Bloomfield
Bloomfield
Traveling between the far western outpost of Fort Pitt and the more established cities of the eastern coast, the fertile valley impressed upon a young officer a lasting memory that inspired many trips to the Allegheny Region. The man wrote of one such trip, in his famed journal, where he was traveling towards a strategic fort at the confluence of three rivers, along “the high ground through a field of many blooms." Based on his warm weather travels, it is most likely he was viewing a field of Pennsylvania’s native flora known as the Trillium, and the color of the shirt is inspired by that flower, specifically the Red Trillium. This young officer was none other than George Washington, and is indirectly credited with naming the neighborhood he traveled through: Bloomfield.
The area he mentioned would later be acquired from the Lenape Nation by settler Casper Taub and later sold to his son-in-law Joseph Conrad Winebiddle. Winebiddle’s plantation would further develop into a formal community, and draw the attention of the neighboring city, being annexed by Pittsburgh in 1868. Shortly afterwards, waves of immigrants came to settle in the nascent neighborhood, chiefly among them from the Abruzzo region of Italy. These group would eventually establish the community as the “Little Italy” of Pittsburgh, and the nickname has endured as Bloomfield has continued to diversify. An Azure blue highlights the graphic of the shirt and represents that Italian heritage.
Professional sports are ingrained into almost every facet of the Steel City, with Bloomfield inhabiting a unique place in athletic history. In a bit of unique NFL trivia, the Pittsburgh Steelers cut their rookie draft-pick Johnny Unitas in 1955, due to the head coach not believing in him. With few options, Unitas returned home, which was still Pittsburgh, to work construction jobs. He was still able to play football, albeit at a semi-professional level, to sharpen his skills and eventually reenter the NFL. Before his return and eventual Hall Of Fame career with Baltimore, Unitas would play weekends for the Bloomfield Rams, playing both offense and defense due to the humble rosters of semi-professional football. A ram illustration represents this unique history.
Pittsburgh Railways operated trolley cars throughout the city, connecting neighborhoods with convenient public transit: the 77/54 line, Northside-Carrick, and affectionately known as “The Flying Fraction”, would have been the prominent trolley line for the Bloomfield neighborhood.
